Casus, sat at her painfully bare kitchen table, her bags packed next to her on the floor. On the table was a large, glass jar with hundreds of small pieces of white paper folded up inside. She waited. It was April 22nd and it was time, once again, to pick from the jar. She watched the clock and waited some more. At precisely 4:22 pm she stuck her hand in the jar, rummaged around and pulled out a single piece of white paper. “71 NK14” was all it said. Casus opened the large Road Atlas sitting on her table and turned to page 71. It was a map of Northern New York. She found the “NK” along the side and ran her finger across until it lined up with “14” that was along the bottom of the page. There it was. Her new home for the next year, Sherburne or New Berlin or some other small town in that quadrant. She allowed herself, for just a second, to wonder what it was like there. Then, she stuffed the jar in a duffel bag and tucked the Road Atlas under her arm. With sigh, she stood up, picked up her bags and walked out the door, not once glancing around for one last look.
