Mo’s Wish
With one lusty breath, Mo filled the air around her with all the dandelion’s fuzz. She opened her eyes and saw Stella staring at her, swatting at fuzz flying near her face.
“Whatcha wish for?” Stella asked.
“I thought that’s a secret.” replied Mo, watching the fuzz drift away.
“Come on! You can tell me cause I’m your best friend.” implored Stella. Mo glanced at Stella and then back at the last bits of fuzz flying away in the sunlight. She was quiet.
“Well I know whatcha’d wish for anyway.” continued Stella. “Everyone knows that you’d wish for your Momma to get better.”
“That’s NOT what I wished for!” shot Mo, hotly as she felt her cheeks get red. The thought had crossed her mind to wish for Momma to get well but Mo knew better, she knew it would be a wasted wish.
“Well I know that’s what I’d want most, if it were my Momma.” said Stella, who seemed pleased that she got a rise out of Mo.
Mo looked at Stella and then at the setting sun and said, “You don’t always have to wish for what you want most.”
I felt like I was in the middle of a really sensitive coming of age book. I hope when your time frees up in a few years that you’ll consider writing a novel…..
